Sports, school, even walking down the street seemed to be difficult for this clumsy pushover. One day, in order to help her no good son with his studies, Tsuna’s mother hired a tutor named Reborn. To Tsuna’s surprise, the new tutor was an infant, who claimed to be an assassin for the Italian mafia. Tsuna, as a distant relative of the Vongola family, has been named its new successor… since all the previous candidates have unfortunately been killed. It is Reborn’s duty to whip Tsuna into a suitable leader for the strongest mafia family in Italy, despite the fact that Tsuna wants nothing to do with Reborn or his crazy mafia associates. Reborn’s main method of instructing Tsuna seems to involve forcing him to do things he never would consider. His weapon of choice is usually the Dying Will Bullets, which when fired at someone’s forehead causes them to lose all the external limits on their body and gives them superhuman strength, speed and endurance to try and die without any regrets. For example, the first time Tsuna was shot with the Dying Will Bullet he immediately ran off and confessed to Kyoko Sasagawa that he had a crush on her. Tsuna can find this both helpful and embarrassing. On the one hand, he can use the abilities of the Dying Will Bullet to save his new friends and do things he never could before. On the other hand, he always ends up running around like a maniac in his underwear and usually is humiliated when the Dying Will Bullet wears off five minutes later. Despite the constant embarrassment, shock, and abuse Reborn puts him through, though, Tsuna grows to like aspects of the mafia, since if Reborn had never arrived, he never would have been able to make new friends (who are now part of his mafia ‘family’) and gain a little of his confidence back. As the story moves on, Tsuna’s life becomes more than just the crazy adventures Reborn puts him through and he is dragged into the darker mafia world. First, a rogue gang led by Mukuro Rokudo attacks him and his friends. Mukuro’s goal was to possess Tsuna’s body and use his leadership role to take revenge on the mafia. During the battle, Tsuna’s friends were nearly killed and Tsuna gained a new fighting mode. Leon, Reborn’s pet chameleon, created a set of mittens for Tsuna to wear as well as a new ‘Rebuke’ Bullet. Together, these two items allow Tsuna to go into Hyper Dying Will Mode, which removes the limits on Tsuna’s body internally instead of externally and awakens his Hyper Intuition (which is dormant in the Vongola bloodline). With more control over his strength and speed as well as his mittens, which transform into flaming gloves, Tsuna was able to defeat Mukuro and life went back to relatively normal. (Later in the story Tsuna would be given pills that allow him to go into Hyper Dying Will Mode without Reborn around to fire the Rebuke Bullet at him). Unfortunately, the mafia world is not so easy to ignore. Tsuna was caught in a succession struggle with Xanxus, the other candidate to become the Tenth leader of the Vongola. Tsuna’s mafia family learned that to be considered legitimate, they had to possess all seven of the Vongola rings, which are both a symbol for the family as well as powerful in their own right. Tsuna would have been perfectly happy to give Xanxus the rings, but neither Xanxus nor his elite Varia team would have been satisfied unless all the loose ends were eliminated. A tournament was used to determine who would possess each ring between Tsuna’s friends and the Varia, eventually resulting in an all or nothing match between the wrathful Xanxus and mild mannered Tsuna. After heavy training, Tsuna was able to match Xanxus in a fight and eventually freeze him to end their battle. However, the rest of the Varia had managed to gain all the rings and used them to free Xanxus. Despite gaining all the rings, Xanxus was unable to become the next successor since he did not have Vongola blood in his veins, revealing that he was adopted. The Sky Ring, given to the leader of the Vongola, rejected him and Tsuna became the official tenth Vongola leader. Currently in the story Tsuna and his friends have switched places with themselves ten years in the future and are stuck in the middle of a mafia war. They were all shocked to learn that Tsuna himself is dead in the future, having been gunned down in public. The Vongola family itself has nearly been destroyed, with many of their allies killed or driven into hiding by the Millefiore family. Before being switched with his younger self, Gokudera tried to warn Tsuna to kill a certain individual in the past to prevent this bleak future, but the ten year bazooka which switched them seems to be malfunctioning. Uncertain how they are suppose to save the Vongola family in the future when their older more experienced selves could not, Tsuna and his friends are desperately trying to improve their strength to face the Millefiore family. The only advantage they have is the possession of the Vongola rings, which future Tsuna had destroyed for unknown reasons before the Millefiore attacked. Personality: Drawing attention to himself or creating conflict just completely goes against Tsuna’s nature. Years of being told he is worthless made him hesitant to try anything, and he preferred to be quiet and unnoticed rather than just make a fool of himself. Whenever he did find something he wanted to do, he would quickly talk himself out of it, since he would be sure to fail anyway. It is this reluctant nature that Reborn forces Tsuna to fight constantly. The Dying Will bullet is one way, since it temporary gives Tsuna the confidence he needs and proves to him that not everything is going to end up badly (and even if it does it is not the end of the world). However, Reborn often just puts Tsuna in situations where he cannot refuse to act or someone else could suffer, forcing Tsuna to overcome his timid nature in order to help someone else. As Tsuna’s mafia family grows larger and closer, Tsuna grows as well, and he will struggle protect them as they have protected him even though he feels worthless and frightened. He is extremely high strung. Tsuna has a tendency to shriek when he is surprised and panic whenever something is not going quite according to plan (which seems to be always in his life). This can sometimes lead to him being a bit more curt with people, but it is rarely noticed in such crazy circumstances. Tsuna is often worried he is offending someone or being a burden, even when he has every right to complain. For example, when is own mother and his friends all forgot his birthday yet remembered Reborn’s which is a day before, he felt like he was acting like a spoiled brat once they remembered and said they could celebrate both together. The part that draws a lot of people to Tsuna is that he is really, really good at understanding them. This could be partially due to his Vongola intuition, but it is also just part of his gentle nature. Tsuna not only senses when something is troubling a friend or an enemy, but he also seems to have a great amount of compassion for them. Several of the people who initially began by trying to kill Tsuna end up being his friends and allies. Tsuna said during the Varia ring battles that he could not fight to be the Tenth Boss of the Vongola. It did not really interest him. But what he will fight for is his friends and all the happy times they have together, and he is unwilling to sacrifice any one of them even if it means losing a battle now and then. Some random information: Tsuna is officially the mafia boss with the most difficulty turning down a request, no matter how ridiculous it is. He is also the mafia boss with the least amount of ambition. He has a knack for telling when people are lying or hiding their true feelings but he is polite enough not to question them on their motives unless he feels it is particularily important. Tsuna's childhood dream was to be a giant robot. ^^ He can't sleep in complete darkness. He can't drink coffee, taste the difference between ham and sausage or butter and margarine. He is afraid of moths. He has never scored 100% on anything. Skips school on days where there are shots. Has trouble multiplying by seven. Lost 245 individual competitions straight.
